Peru: Former Vice-President Lourdes Mendoza dies in Arequipa

Former Vice-President of the Republic and former Congresswoman Lourdes Mendoza passed away from a heart attack at age 66, it was announced on Friday.

The information was confirmed by her sister, Maria Helena Mendoza, who, in a message to her family and close acquittances, stated that the death occurred the day before.

A native of Peru's southern city of Arequipa, Lourdes Mendoza also participated in business entities linked to her family, such as Compañía de Radiodifusión Arequipa (Arequipa Broadcasting Company), owner of the local Channel 9.

In politics, she served as deputy mayor in the provincial municipality of that jurisdiction.

Executive Branch

In 2006, Lourdes Mendoza was part of the presidential ticket presented by the Peruvian Aprista Party, headed by the late Alan Garcia, and which won the general elections of that year.

From July 2006 to July 2011, she served as Second Vice-President of the Republic, while Luis Giampietri held the First-Vice Presidency.

Mendoza's body will be laid out and buried in Arequipa, as this was always her wish, her sister indicated.

Following confirmation of her death, various political and business figures from Arequipa and Lima expressed their condolences via social media.
