Transportation-Communications Minister Raul Perez Reyes and United States Ambassador to Peru Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath supervised the Matarani Port Terminal, located in Islay district, Arequipa region, southern Peru.

"This is a port with a very important mining component, to which the cargo from projects like Tia Maria will be added. For the Government, it is a priority to implement the necessary infrastructure to handle the increased mineral cargo, particularly in Arequipa," Perez Reyes stated on Thursday.

The Cabinet member reported that, through the National Port Authority (APN), the proposal from the concessionaire in charge of this terminal is being evaluated.

This includes the construction of a new multipurpose dock, improvements to the mineral system, acquisition of mobile cranes, a new warehouse, among other modifications that will enhance and increase the operational capacity.

During the tour, the minister and the ambassador, accompanied by Tisur General Manager Mauricio Nuñez del Prado, visited Pier F, which serves as a direct outlet for mining production from Cerro Verde, Las Bambas, and Antapaccay.

Also participating in the event were Deputy Transportation Minister Ismael Sutta and APN Board Chairman Juan Carlos Paz, among other officials.

"The Matarani Port Terminal has received 50% of its investment from an American fund. Its success, over these 25 years of concession, during which it has increased its handling capacity from less than 1 million tons to 8 million tons, renews foreign investors' confidence in Peru," the minister indicated.

In turn, the U.S. ambassador highlighted the focus on boosting projects that contribute to the Peruvian economy's future.

"In 2026, we will celebrate 200 years of bilateral relations. We are partners and we continue to look towards the future together," she expressed.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications reaffirmed its commitment to the port sector's development in the national territory, which will allow for the continued revitalization of Peru's economy.
