Peru: Fishing sector production up 56.77% in June 2024

13:19 | Lima, Aug. 1.

Fishing sector production increased by 56.77% last June compared to the same month in 2023, thus marking three months of continuous growth, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Thursday.

According to INEI's technical report, the fishing sector accumulated a 45.02% growth during the January-June 2024 period.

June's result was influenced by increased extraction of marine species (+74.85%) for indirect human consumption (anchoveta for fishmeal and oil), reaching 241,565 extracted tonswhich compared to the 41,535 tons of the same month in 2023, is equivalent to a 481.59% expansion.

It should be noted that the landing of this resource was recorded in Peru's northern, central, and southern coastal areas, mainly at the ports of Chimbote, Malabrigo, Coishco, Callao, and Tambo de Mora.

The capture of species for direct human consumption also increased by 17.02%; for canning industry purposes, it rose by 51.3%; for freezing preparation, it went up by 23.1%; and for fresh consumption, it grew by 10.1%.

On the other hand, fishing of continental origin decreased by 21.02% due to reduced extraction of species for fresh consumption, frozen preparation, and curing.

Electricity

In the analyzed month, electricity generation rose 0.06% as a result of increased generation from hydroelectric sources (+18.6%) and major renewable energies (+36.9%).

This result was offset by lower generation of energy from thermoelectric sources (-15.1%).

Among the companies that increased their production were: Electroperú, Fenix Power Perú, Statkraft Perú, Egemsa, Orazul Energy Perú S.A., Inland Energy S.A.C., Egasa, San Gaban, and Celepsa.

Mining and Hydrocarbons

In June 2024, the mining and hydrocarbons sector decreased by 7.47% due to lower dynamism of metallic mining activity (-8.08%), associated with low production of zinc (-20.9%), iron (-14.7%), copper (-12%), gold (-2.5%), and lead (-0.3%).

Meanwhile, the production of molybdenum (+24.6%), silver (+6.1%), and tin (+5.8%) increased.

The hydrocarbon subsector contracted by 3.51% due to lower production of natural gas (-10.2%) and natural gas liquids (-1.2%), whereas crude oil production rose 1.5%.
