By hosting important meetings, Peru is entering a decisive phase within the organization of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum events to be held this year, said Ambassador Carlos Vasquez, 2024 Chair of APEC Senior Officials' Meetings.

During 2024's second half, "we will host the most significant events in terms of deliverables or objectives that Peru has set," the diplomat told Andina News Agency.

As an example, Vasquez mentioned the Energy Ministerial Meeting (EMM), which will take place in Lima on August 16.

At this event, ministers from APEC member economies are expected to issue a statement adopting a policy guide for low-emission hydrogen use across the region.

"There are many APEC economies that are extremely interested in developing hydrogen as a renewable energy. In Peru, there are companies interested in developing (using) it because it is low-polluting and could decarbonize several industries," he explained.

Food security and SMEs

During the second half of 2024, the Food Security Ministerial Meeting (FSMM) will be held in Trujillo, from August 12 to 18, Vasquez noted.

At this event, a joint declaration of principles to reduce food loss and waste is expected to be approved.

Ambassador Vasquez underlined the importance of this event, since -he said- approximately 1.3 billion tons of food are lost annually worldwide.

Added to this is that 3 billion people do not have access to safe and nutritious food, 370 million of them residing in the Asia-Pacific region.

In the case of Peru, 47% of food is wasted or lost in the supply chain, he indicated.

From September 9 to 13, the Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting (SMEMM) will be held in Pucallpa.

The objective is to develop a roadmap for transitioning informal economic actors into the formal and global economy, he indicated.

The official also underscored that the number of delegates from APEC economies who are arriving in Peru will exceed expectations.

According to the diplomat, they will exceed 12,000, along with 2,500 men and women of the press, who will cover the Economic Leaders' Week activities in November.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
