Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer met with Costa Rica's Foreign Trade Minister Manuel Tovar to discuss Peru's accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

During the event held on Monday, it was emphasized that the Peruvian Presidency's leadership and the commitment of all sectors of government will be key to ensuring continuity in Peru's OECD accession process, particularly in a pre-election year.

At the special session of the Peru-OECD Multisectoral Commission, Minister Schialer welcomed Minister Tovar —who led Costa Rica's OECD accession process— and expressed his gratitude for the Central American country's unwavering support for Peru in its aspiration to join the organization.

The Peruvian diplomat highlighted that Costa Rica —and Minister Tovar in particular— chaired this year's OECD Ministerial Council Meeting, which focused on strengthening cooperation between the organization and Latin America-the Caribbean.

In turn, Minister Tovar reiterated Costa Rica's firm and unwavering support for Peru's OECD accession process, highlighting it as one of his priorities.

Likewise, he emphasized that both nations seek to strengthen their ties and align their positions at multilateral forums.

Costa Rica aims to join the Pacific Alliance and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), while Peru seeks integration into the OECD and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA).

During this session, the Costa Rican delegation shared with Peruvian government representatives the best practices that guided them on their path to OECD membership.

They highlighted the need to strengthen technical teams to address OECD recommendations and enhance multisectoral coordination.

Similarly, emphasis was placed on the importance of ensuring a smooth transition to the next government. The tangible benefits that full OECD membership has brought to Costa Rica's citizens were highlighted as well.

The meeting was also attended by Prime Minister Eduardo Arana; Foreign Trade Minister Desilu Leon; Peru's Permanent Representative to the OECD, Ambassador Ana Maria Sanchez; the Deputy Ministers of Justice and Human Rights, Labor and Employment Promotion, and Foreign Trade and Tourism sectors; as well as officials from the Ministries of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation, Environment, and Agrarian Development and Irrigation.
