The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Wednesday participated in the 16th Summit of the Pacific Alliance —a Latin American integration which he deemed as a priority that will contribute to the economic and sustainable development of member countries.

"Today, we finished the 16th Pacific Alliance Summit meeting in the brother country of Colombia," Mr. Castillo expressed via Twitter.

"I am convinced that this Latin American integration represents a priority which will contribute to the economic and sustainable development of our countries," he added.

Summit

The 16th Summit of the Pacific Alliance, held in Bahia Malaga-Buenaventura, was attended by Presidents Ivan Duque (Colombia)Sebastian Piñera (Chile) and Pedro Castillo (Peru), as well as Secretary of Finance and Public Credit Rogelio Ramirez —on behalf of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (Mexico).

President Guillermo Lasso (Ecuador) also spoke at the plenary session, expressing his country's firm interest in joining the bloc.

Pacific Alliance

The Pacific Alliance constitutes a regional integration mechanism made up of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru, through which it seeks to progressively advance towards the free circulation of goods, services, capital, and people.

This is part of a strategy to become a platform for projection to the world, with emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region.

On the latest edition, Colombia handed over the Pro Tempore Presidency to Mexico for the 2022 period.

Peru will assume the Pro Tempore Presidency in January 2023.

Associated State

During the plenary session, Singapore was welcomed as the first Associated State of the Pacific Alliance —after four years of negotiations.

In his virtual participation, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong thanked the invitation to participate in the current summit and said he was honored that his country became the first Associated State and to sign a free trade agreement with the bloc.

According to the Prime Minister, this FTA will serve to institutionalize and strengthen the economic alliance among countries, as well as invigorate trade among those nations and build stronger ties.

The Pacific Alliance was established in 2011 as an economic and development initiative among four Latin American nations: Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.
