A delegation of four Peruvian cooperatives, joined by Sierra y Selva Exportadora (Exporting Andes and Jungle), took part at Biofach —the world's most important trade fair for organic products— held February 12-15 in Germany.

With their participation, more than 1,000 families producing quinoa, ginger, and coffee will benefit from sales to countries like Germany, Belgium, Canada, Dubai, Spain, France, Italy, and Vietnam.

COPAISEG San Roman and Cooperativa Agro Industrial Cabana Ltda, two cooperatives dedicated to the production of organic quinoa in southern Puno region, received offers of nearly US$1.2 million for the sale of lots of Andean grains.

Meanwhile, Cooperativa Agroindustrial Fruits Pichanaki (Junin region) exhibited organic ginger and started talks with 22 import firms, to which it can ship up to 40 full containers, which is equivalent to 900 tons.

The Peruvian organic coffee produced by Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Ecologica Alto Palomar (Junin region) also stood out, thus generating interest among import firms with its washed/natural process Arabic coffee and securing sales of 133 tons worth US$600,000.

Cooperatives' commitment

Sierra y Selva Exportadora Program CEO Jose Ezeta affirmed that the partnership among producers is key to develop family farming because it helps reach potential customers in one place and have better prices for their products, taking into account the volumes involved.

Moreover, Ezeta stressed the commitment and development of agricultural cooperatives, whose members have made progress in their commercial evolution, with the support of Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry and its affiliated bodies such as Sierra y Selva Exportadora, which prepares cooperatives and associations in the highlands and rainforest of Peru for their adequate integration into the market.
