The Chief of Staff of the Coast Guard Operations Command at the Peruvian Navy, Jesus Menacho, on Wednesday confirmed that a second oil spill was reported at La Pampilla refinery operated by Repsol.

In statements to RPP Noticias, he reported that a stain was observed at the Multi-buoy Terminal No. 2 of La Pampilla refinery.

The oil was spotted during an overflight conducted on Tuesday to verify the clean-up and remediation work related to the oil spill that occurred on January 15.

After that came the request for a meeting with the company's executives, who reported that a small spill occurred during the pipeline repair. Thus, containment booms were placed around the spill site.

Menacho remarked that the exact amount of oil poured into the sea as part of this new spill remains unknown, but he referred to a visit to the site this morning —together with the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA)— to take the corresponding samples.

"It is a relatively small spill that has been contained by the barrier. The nearby coastal areas are being monitored to verify that it (oil) has not reached there," he added.

January 15 spill

On January 15, an oil spill was reported in Lima's Ventanilla district sea area, at La Pampilla refinery —run by Repsol company. According to the company's version, the spill was caused by the strong waves recorded along the Peruvian coast following the eruption of an underwater volcano off Tonga in Oceania.

It is estimated that some 6,000 barrels of oil were spilled into the sea.

The oil slick has spread along the coast of Ventanilla, reaching Ancon and Chancay, where a negative impact on marine flora and fauna is registered.
