Peruvian FA Min promotes candidacy for OAS Secretary-General

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Gustavo Meza-Cuadra has met in Guatemala with authorities from several countries of the Americas to promote the candidacy of Ambassador Hugo de Zela for Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Cabinet member Meza-Cuadra represented President Martin Vizcarra at the inauguration ceremony for Alejandro Giammattei as President of the hosting country.

Within this framework, officials Meza-Cuadra and De Zela met with Paraguayan Vice-President Hugo Velasquez to discuss the OAS agenda and Peru's Secretary-General candidacy.

Likewise, Ambassador De Zela met with Mexico's Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard with whom he discussed the future of the OAS and the process of electing the Secretary-General. 

Consensus

Furthermore, Minister Meza-Cuadra and his Honduran counterpart Lisandro Rosales agreed on the need to build consensus and addressed the Peruvian candidacy. They also stressed the importance of South-South cooperation.

Moreover, the Head of Torre Tagle Palace met with Nicaraguan Foreign Affairs Minister Denis Moncada and agreed to build consensus in the face of regional polarization.

In addition, Meza-Cuadra and his Guatemalan designated counterpart Pedro Brolo coincided on the importance of strengthening the relationship between the two countries and reinforcing cooperation in various areas such as tourism. They discussed the main proposals of Peru's candidacy for the continental forum's Secretariat-General.

Lastly, Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister presented the national aspiration to Belize's Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber.

The meetings took place on Tuesday.

The new OAS Secretary-General for the 2020-2025 period will be elected on March 20 during a special session of the General Assembly.

The winner must obtain the support of at least 18 of the 34 active members of the regional bloc.
