The
President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Sunday afternoon announced that the Government will approve a new economic stimulus program for artists and cultural groups affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Head of State, the measure seeks to meet the demand of artists who were severely affected by the pandemic.
"Artists are absolutely necessary in the cultural and national life as they make us feel cultural identity and what we are as a country," the Peruvian leader expressed.
"That is why we have made this effort and the Ministry of Economy agreed with that. We will soon publish an urgency decree to announce the resumption of aid," he stated.
According to the statesman, his visit to Cañete Province was intended to get support from
singer and former Culture Minister Susana Baca, as well as from artists, so that they can join a campaign to help Peruvians successfully fight the COVID-19 pandemic by complying with health protocols, wearing a face mask, and maintaining physical distance.
Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra —who joined the President on the Cañete visit— explained that S/20 million (about US$5.47 million) will be allocated for economic stimulus, which will bring continuity to initiatives launched last year.
"We expect to support more than 4,000 projects this year, more than last year, as well as to the bearers of the intangible heritage, including traditional musicians and artisans who preserve traditional culture. We hope to help over 2,000 in this category," he said.
Remarks were made from Cañete —one of the nine provinces in Lima region— where the President met with Susana Baca.
