Interior Minister Vicente Romero and National Police Commander General Jorge Angulo provided details of the capture of terrorists Marco Quispe Vargas (Comrade Marco or Gabrielito) and Alexi Berrocal Matute (Comrade Rafael), who are accused of perpetrating the ambush in which seven police agents died in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (Vraem) last February.

Minister Romero noted that this capture is a positive result of patient intelligence work carried out by members of the Anti-Terrorism Directorate (Dircote) of the Peruvian National Police (PNP).

"This reflects the Government's will to stand firm in its fight against terrorism in order to guarantee peace and contribute to development in the Vraem area," he said.

For his part, Defense Minister Jorge Chavez renewed his sector's commitment to continue working together with the Armed Forces, the PNP, and the Public Ministry, with the aim of continuing to achieve significant results in this fight.

The Shining Path terrorist Quispe Vargas is the son of terrorist leaders Marco Antonio Quispe Palomino (Comrade Gabriel) and Florabel Vargas Figueroa (Comrade Vilma).

In the same operation, carried out on Saturday, September 30, at 05:45 in the morning, in the town of Canayre, province of Huanta, Ayacucho region, Alexi Berrocal Matute (Comrade Rafael), member of the self-proclaimed "Militarized Communist Party of Peru," which operates in the area, was also arrested.
