Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea on Tuesday signed a headquarters agreement with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) Executive Secretary Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs to host the multilateral organization's 40th session in Lima.

In its capacity as host country, Peru will assume the Pro Tempore Presidency of ECLAC for the period 2025-2026, said the foreign affairs minister, who explained that a thematic agenda of 11 points of interest for the region will be addressed during this session.

"Peru will be present at ECLAC on the best terms," Gonzalez-Olaechea stated.

In turn, Salazar-Xirinachis affirmed that the decisions taken during the 40th session in Lima will guide the future work of ECLAC regarding the main development challenges for the region.

"11 major areas that we have identified will be comprehensively addressed, 11 major mutually reinforcing transformations to transition to a more productive, inclusive and sustainable development model, including a major productive transformation," he said.

Other points to be addressed will be inequality, improvement of social protection systems, gender equality, promotion of environmental stimulus to move towards sustainability, digital transformation, safe and orderly immigration, strengthening of governance, among others.

"Emphasis will be placed on 'the how' and not just 'the what' to move towards transformations," he said.

The Cabinet member remarked that Peru was unanimously chosen to host the 40th session, which will be held from October 9 to 11, and will gather foreign affairs ministers, State ministers, and experts on specific topics.
