Peru State returns bodies of 81 victims of 1980-2000 violence

19:18 | Ayacucho (Ayacucho region), Dec. 11.

The Peruvian State returned —at Ayacucho Cathedral— the human remains of 81 people to fulfil the commitments made to the families of victims of the Inca country's dark 1980-2000 terrorism episode.

As is known, terrorism shook the Andean nation for two decades, leaving deep wounds in thousands of people.

Including adults and children, 42 of the bodies were identified as males and 38 as females.

Only one person could not be identified. Thus, the body was handed over to local authorities in Tastabamba to ensure a dignified burial in accordance with religious and cultural beliefs.

The General Directorate for the Search of Missing Persons (DGBPD) of the Justice and Human Rights Ministry joined the families —who headed to 20 different communities— for the burial. The aim was to provide psychosocial support and safeguard the emotional health of the relatives.

This task was undertaken in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Regional Health Directorate of Ayacucho.

It must be noted the work of the Public Ministry —through the Second Supraprovincial Prosecutor's Office of Ayacucho and the Specialized Forensic Team— was key to recovering and identifying the victims.
