Through coordinated efforts between the Ministries of Foreign Trade-Tourism and the Foreign Affairs, Peru played an active role in APEC, achieving a series of positive outcomes for the country. These include the signing of bilateral trade agreements, consensus on ministerial declarations, bilateral meetings, as well as a significant boost to tourism and Peru's global image, positioning the nation prominently on the world stage.

This year has opened new opportunities to strengthen Peru's ties with Asia. This was exemplified by the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Hong Kong and the optimization of the FTA with the People's Republic of China —treaties that provide new prospects for economic development.

The FTA with Kong marks Peru's 23rd trade agreement, granting preferential access to its 59th partner.

This agreement will primarily strengthen trade in services and foster opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by enabling them to supply services online and work in fields such as software, mobile applications, audiovisual productions, consulting, and more.

The optimization of the FTA with China elevates this commercial relationship, introducing bilateral commitments to improve international logistics —a key development following the inauguration of Chancay Port.

It is worth noting that since the original FTA with China was signed in 2009, Peruvian exports to the Asian Giant have grown at an average annual rate of 12.8%.

During APEC, the conclusion of chapter negotiations for a future FTA with Indonesia was announced. Next steps include negotiating annexes and signing the agreement.

Indonesia —with a population exceeding 276 million is the fourth most populous country globally and the largest economy in Southeast Asia.

Additionally, Peru and the Philippines agreed to initiate work on establishing a Bilateral Committee aimed at increasing trade —a first step toward potentially negotiating a trade agreement with this nation.

Bilateral Meetings

During the forum, Mincetur participated in bilateral meetings with Indonesia, Singapore, Canada, New Zealand, Chile, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, and Australia.

It also engaged with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), as well as the Government Affairs and Public Policy Vice Presidencies of Google and TikTok.

These efforts aim to strengthen Peru's international presence, position it as a reliable partner in the Asia-Pacific region, and enhance its global image.

The objective is to foster inclusive economic growth, opening new opportunities for trade, investment, and international cooperation to benefit the country.

Peru hosted APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
