Peru President greets former UN Secretary-General on his 100th birthday

The President of the Republic, Martin Vizcarra, on Sunday greeted former Secretary-General of the United Nations Organization (UN), Peruvian Javier Perez de Cuellar, who has turned 100 years old.

Within this framework, the Head of State highlighted former Ambassador Perez de Cuellar's legacy after the various positions he held at the service of Peru and the rest of the world.

"I want to greet Javier Perez de Cuellar for his 100 years of life. (He is) An illustrious Peruvian of impeccable trajectory dedicated to the service of Peru and the international community," he wrote on Twitter.

Likewise, the Head of State thanked "his legacy —as a diplomat, Foreign Affairs Minister, President of the Council of Ministers, and Secretary General of the UN— which is still in force."


The Foreign Affairs Ministry also congratulated the former diplomat on this day.

"With great pride, today we celebrate the 100th birthday of Ambassador Javier Perez de Cuellar, the only Peruvian and Latin American diplomat in history to have twice assumed two post of Secretary-General of the Organization of United Nations between 1982 and 1991," it posted on Twitter.

Javier Perez de Cuellar served as UN Secretary General from January 1982 to December 1991, replacing Kurt Waldheim.

During the transition Government of former Peruvian President Valentin Paniagua (November 22, 2000 — July 28, 2001), he served as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

A career diplomat, he has served as Ambassador of Peru to the disappeared Soviet Union, France, Poland, and Switzerland.
