Peru President calls for unity against gender violence

19:28 | Moquegua (Moquegua region), Jan. 16.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday urged citizens to be united with the purpose of fighting gender violence.

Thus, he referred to the recent episode occurred early Thursday in Lima's La Victoria district, where a man tried to burn his partner with gasoline, after being released due to the decision made by a prosecutor.

"We will engage in coordination with the Prosecutor's Office and Judicial Branch, so stricter measures will be taken," he said in this sense.

Before the President's remarks, Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos called on the population to report the cases of aggression against women, so that the State can act in a comprehensive and immediate way in such cases.

The institutions, he said, articulate their work in the best way on the issue of aggression against female citizens by "not only by preventing and informing, but also acting immediately in the face of these unfortunate events."
