Peru PM: Government supports dialogue to solve mining conflict

10:42 | Lima, Mar. 26.

Prime Minister Salvador del Solar highlighted the fact that the Peruvian Government has constantly supported talks to solve the conflict around Las Bambas mining project.

"We need dialogue, we support dialogue, and I hope there will be a solution to this problem very soon," the official expressed.

Energy and Mines Minister Francisco Ismodes and Presidency of the Council of Ministers' (PCM) Deputy Territorial Governance Minister Raul Molina held a meeting with Cusco Region Governor Jean Paul Benavente in order to promote audiences between the parts involved in conflict

Therefore, Ismodes and Molina also met with Apurimac Region Governor Baltazar Lantaron.

Likewise, the officials will hold a meeting with Cotabambas district's and province's authorities in the said region.

In this sense, the cabinet chief indicated the Energy and Mines Minister and Deputy Territorial Governance Minister are the government's representatives who act as intermediaries in the social problem between protestors and the mining company.

Members of the Fuerabamba community (Apurimac region) have blocked a roadway corridor in Cusco region that is used by Las Bambas to transport its copper production to Matarani Port.

It should be noted only the mining company's vehicles are forbidden to transit. Fuerabamba community demands Las Bambas to pay compensation for the use of the lands.
