Peru: Mining and hydrocarbons production up 5.17% in August 2023

18:16 | Lima, Oct. 1.

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) on Sunday reported that the production of the mining and hydrocarbons sector increased 5.17% in August 2023, due to the positive result of metallic mining (4.63%) and hydrocarbon (9.08%) activities.

This was announced by INEI in its technical report Situational Progress of Economic Activity.

This result was influenced by higher production volume of copper (7.5%), zinc (6.8%), gold (8.3%), and iron (17.5%). Meanwhile, the production volume of silver and molybdenum declined 4.1% and 24.4%, respectively.

Likewise, the hydrocarbons subsector witnessed a recovery due to greater exploitation of natural gas liquids (23.7%) and natural gas (16%). However, the exploitation of crude oil experienced a decrease (-12.5%).

Fishing sector up 49.14%

The production of the fishing sector grew 49.14%, driven by greater extraction of species of maritime origin (66.02%) for indirect human consumption (anchovy for fishmeal and fish oil), totaling 182,785 tons of catch, compared to 35,295 tons in the same month the previous year.

The landing of anchovy was part of the exploratory fishing carried out in the north-central area of the coast, mainly in the ports of Chicama and Chimbote, which together represent 76% of the total catch of said resource.

Likewise, fishing for direct human consumption grew by 17.99%, due to a greater capture of species for canned (67.5%), fresh (20.5%) and frozen (19.5%) foods.

However, landings aimed at the preparation of cured fish meat experienced a decline (-66%).

On the other hand, fishing of continental origin grew by 0.90%, with an increase in the extraction of species for fresh consumption.
