Peru marks 36 years of presence in Antarctica

15:07 | Lima, Mar. 28.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the 36th anniversary of Peru's presence in Antarctica.

Via social media, the government agency stressed the importance of having a base in that part of the world.

Likewise, it highlighted the scientific research projects that Peru has developed there.

The first Peruvian expedition of a scientific nature arrived at May 25 Island in Antarctica in 1988.

The following year, the construction of the Machu Picchu base began in the Admiralty Bay area of said place, for scientific research purposes. It operates between December and March only, due to weather conditions.

Antar Missions

As part of the Antar missions, which started in 1991, Peru has developed biological, geophysical, meteorological, and hydrological studies of the environment, as well as works on satellite technology and the use of alternative energies.

In 2013, then-President Ollanta Humala visited the Machu Picchu base in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Peru's presence in Antarctica.

Initially, the round-trip transportation of the Peruvian missions sent to this part of the world was carried out by the Humboldt ship.

As of 2017, Humboldt was replaced by BAP Carrasco.

Said ship returned to Callao on March 12, after the completion of the 30th Antar Mission. On this occasion, twelve scientific research studies were carried out in the fields of oceanography, geology, biology, environment, volcanism, and hydrography.

BAP Carrasco set sail for this mission in December last year. At the departure ceremony, President Dina Boluarte stated that the studies that Peru conducted in Antarctica are oriented, among other things, towards the preservation of the environment in said place.
