Peru enhances security level in digital identities and certificates

14:24 | Lima, Jan. 23.

With the aim of promoting digital transformation in Peru, the country has implemented a new hierarchy for national digital certification, providing a higher level of security to digital identities and certificates managed by the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC).

This puts Peru on the same level as leading digital nations such as Estonia and Uruguay, thus significantly strengthening digital confidence of citizens.

"Within the framework of the urgency decree on digital confidence, Peru has made a significant stride in terms of security surrounding digital identity of citizens," said Marushka Chocobar, digital government secretary at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

"This achievement has a direct impact on international indicators of digital confidence, government, and competitiveness. Plus, it is aligned with the OECD recommendations on digital transformation," she added.

According to Chocobar, the process was led by RENIEC and marks a very important milestone for digital progress at the national level.

The new hierarchy of digital certification is based on cryptographic algorithms of elliptical curves that provide a higher level of security to digital certificates and identities to be stored in the National Electronic ID Card (DNIe).

This technology will enable services to test data integrity or time stamping features, as well as digital identities based on Mobile ID and Digital ID.

"In the region, Peru is the leader in issuance of digital certificates thanks to the efforts by RENIEC, in its capacity as the national certification body," she remarked.

"In this line and, within the framework of the country's leadership in digital transformation, the Digital Government Secretariat is strengthening the development of secure digital services to develop a unique interaction between citizens and State-run services, as well as encourage the private sector to make progress in the same direction," she added.
