Peru: Cusco airport complies with health protocols to receive passengers

13:55 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jul. 9.

Teniente Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport —located in the Andean city of Cusco— complies with health protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Besides, it is ready to resume operations and receive passengers in the coming days.

"So far, the protocol we have been implementing is guaranteed. All that is left to do is review its compliance, and Diresa-Cusco will take care of that part," Regional Health Director Dario Navarro confirmed.

"We are going to continue to maintain control as always, but it will be stricter than before because we have to supervise the differentiated triage and if a situation arises, we will have to conduct rapid tests as part of this control," he added.

Observing the guidelines to combat the coronavirus is essential, given that flight operations will resume in the course of the next few days —following authorization of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), regarding capacity and infrastructure.

Cusco Region Governor Jean Paul Benavente noted that the population must understand that —with the resumption of operations— health control must be given priority over the reopening of transport services or the regional and national economy.

"The fact of resuming flights does not mean that tourism is necessarily reopening. It means, first of all, that Peruvian nationals will be transported, and then tourism will be incorporated progressively and gradually," he stated.

Furthermore, the regional authority referred to the proposal of allowing cross-border travel from Latin American places where COVID-19 is adequately controlled, such as La Paz (Bolivia) and Bogota (Colombia), in order to resume tourism flights.
