Peru: Council of State considers necessary broad debate on immunity

15:49 | Lima, Jul. 9.

The Council of State on Thursday afternoon indicated that there is unanimity on the need for a broad, thoughtful, and plural debate with the depth that a constitutional amendment —such as that related to parliamentary immunity and the prerogatives of senior officials— deserves.

In a release, council members expressed their support for Congress' decision to have approved —in a first voting session— the law that promotes the suitability of candidates for representative public office —a regulation that prevents the nomination of candidates with first-instance sentences, thus hoping it will be ratified in the second voting.

The Council of State also agreed to meet periodically and develop a short-term work agenda that prioritizes the well-being of all Peruvians with a view to the Independence Bicentennial in 2021.

Earlier today, President Martin Vizcarra led the fifth session of the Council of State in search of consensus to strengthen the reforms that citizens and the country need.
