Peru: Arequipa is home to colorful mountain

14:24 | Yura (Arequipa region), Nov. 25.

A colorful mountain lies at the foot of Chachani Volcano, located in Yura district (Arequipa region). This natural elevation is part of an impressive landscape that attracts more and more visitors on a daily basis.

The journey includes a two-and-a-half-hour trip down the Arequipa-Puno Highway to Pampa Cañahuas, followed by a detour via a non-motorized road.

It takes around four hours to reach the place. The type of road requires an SUV, since it is designated for non-motorized use and needs maintenance.

The tour ends at Nocarani Hill, located at the base of Chachani Volcano, from where visitors are able to see the colorful mountain, whose geological formation has not been studied yet, although it is believed to be associated with marine, lake, and rainwater sediments.

Natural beauty

Alain Dueñas —an amateur trekker who has climbed Chachani Volcano several times— highlighted the natural beauty of the area, whose landscape is enhanced by a small volcano.

Some travel agencies include this destination in tours for adventure travelers. In fact, some 20 tourists visit the area —located at 4,000 m.a.s.l.— each week and end up impressed by its landscape.
