Peru: Anemia reduction in 2019 enabled 43,000 children to access better opportunities

09:12 | Lima, Feb. 6.

In 2019, Peru managed to reduce by 3.4 percentage points the incidence of anemia among children under 3 years of age, as a result of the efforts undertaken by the Ministries of Health and Development-Social Inclusion.

"This way, the prevalence of anemia in this age group was reduced to 40.1%," Health Minister Elizabeth Hinostroza expressed.

"We are glad that the figure has dropped, we have not yet reached the figure we would like to see, but we are talking about 43,000 children who have already left anemia behind, they will have better development and education opportunities. Let's remember that during the first six months of life the brain develops the most," she added.

In this sense, the high-ranking official praised the articulated work carried out by central and local governments, which relied on the support of parents.

Citizen commitment

"Being in the Year of Health Care Universalization, it is important for all of us to be aware that we have to work towards the objectives such as anemia (reduction). Without citizens' commitment, we will not see the results," she said.

The regions that achieved the greatest reduction were Pasco (-8.5%) and Amazonas (-8.1%). In Lima Metropolitan Area, there was also a significant decrease (-5.5%).

Remarks were made at the end of the Council of Ministers session on Wednesday.
