Health Min: COVID-19 response efforts have not ceased in regions across Peru

01:54 | Lima, Jul. 8.

Peru's Health Minister Victor Zamora affirmed that the Government's COVID-19 response efforts to assist regions across the country have not ceased.

However, he admitted that very little had been invested by previous administrations in the health sector over the past 30 years.

"We have never seen a virus like this before. We are to have 2,000 ICU beds, and we continue to increase our capacity. Peru had 5,000 hospital beds and the number will be increased to 20,000," he stated.

Remarks were made Tuesday as he informed of the measures taken to combat COVID-19 in Tumbes region in statements to La Hechicera de Tumbes radio station.

In this regard, the government official revealed that the Ministry of Health (Minsa) has financed the hiring of 256 (health) professionals in said northern region.

"I want to thank the Tumbes health staff who battle daily to save lives. I urge the community to wash hands, wear face masks, and respect social distancing in order to protect against the virus," he added.
