170th anniversary of Chinese immigration to Peru celebrated in Guangzhou

19:07 | Guangzhou (China), Nov. 22.

A special ceremony commemorating the 170th anniversary of Chinese immigration to Peru was held at Guangdong Overseas Chinese Museum in Guangzhou, China.

The event included the presentation of a book written —in Chinese— by Peruvian journalist and sinologist Patricia Castro Obando.

Held on Thursday, the event was organized by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Guangzhou Government and Peruvian Consulate General in Guangzhou.

The book, titled "Los Hakka en el Perú" (The Hakka in Peru), was released by Dr. Castro and published by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Guangzhou Government, in collaboration with Peruvian Consulate General in Guangzhou, as part of such commemorative activities.

The publication is based on a study on the Hakka immigration to the South American nation, and seeks to recognize the value of this Chinese immigrant community.

The photo exhibit "Traces of Chinese in Peru" was opened during the event. It featured a collection of over a hundred photographs from the aforementioned museum, local galleries, and a photo collection at the Chinese Charitable Association in Peru.

The pictures depict the historical arrival of Chinese people in Peru, as well as their adaptation and progressive integration to Peruvian society. Besides, they portray their contribution in economic, academic, medical, artistic, sporting, and gastronomic fields, among other aspects of development.

The event's top Chinese authority was Huang Yebin, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee at Guangzhou Provincial People's Assembly. He visited Peru in October during the celebrations marking the 170th anniversary of Chinese Immigration to Peruvian territory.

Peru's Ambassador to China Luis Quesada highlighted the importance of celebrating Chinese immigrants' invaluable contribution to shaping Peruvian identity and to the historical development of the Inca country.
