Peru's President: Tayta Operation to be intensified in all regions, in shorter time frame

18:40 | Lima, Aug. 12.

The Territorial Aid Operation for Treatment and Isolation in Response to COVID-19 (Tayta Operation) —which has yielded good results— will be carried out more intensively in all regions and in a shorter period of time, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra announced on Wednesday.

The Head of State mentioned that during the Council of Ministers session held today participants agreed that the gradual implementation of Tayta Operation in regions cannot be long deferred.

Therefore, Prime Minister Walter Martos has been asked to ensure effective coordination between the Executive Branch and regional governments, and even the private sector.

"We are working on it, and I have asked him (the Prime Minister) to complete a massive and ambitious timeline of interventions across all regions by the end of this week," the Peruvian leader said this afternoon.

Mr. Vizcarra reiterated that, in the coming days, Tayta Operation will reach Huanuco, Tingo Maria, Puno and Juliaca, providing various points of care and brigades, who will go from house to house conducting screenings, clinical examinations, and delivering medications, particularly to the vulnerable population.

Afterwards, the same strategy will be implemented in Tacna, Cusco and Ayacucho.

Primary care level

On the other hand, Peru's top official noted that Temporary Urgent Care Centers will be implemented in districts with the highest number of COVID-19 infections to facilitate citizens' effective access to biosafety screenings, with early diagnosis as well as early initiation of clinical monitoring and treatment provided by the primary care level, which was neglected at the beginning of the pandemic.

"The health system's primary care facilities were shut down. That was a mistake made in different parts of the world; the disease itself forced health workers to leave. The primary care level should never have been shut down," he emphasized.

For this reason, the statesman underscored that they are working hard to resume the primary care level in all regions because this is where families and people who need it are first treated.

Remarks were made in a televised address to the nation from the Government Palace in Lima. President Vizcarra was joined by State ministers on the occasion.
