Four initiatives led by indigenous communities of the Peruvian Amazon have won the Equator Prize 2019, awarded by the
United Nations Development Programme (UNPD), the Environment Ministry (Minam) has reported.
The four projects —related to the environment sector— were developed in cooperation with the National Forest Conservation Program for the Mitigation of Climate Change and the State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp).
Peruvian winners include: Native Communities of Nuevo Saposoa and Patria Nueva de Mediacion Calleria, Executor of the Administrative Contract of the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve, Executor of the Administrative Contract of Tuntanain, as well as Kemito Ene.
Equator Prize 2019
The winners will each receive US$10,000 and the opportunity for two community representatives to join a week-long summit in New York during the 74th United Nations General Assembly.
They were selected from a pool of 847 nominations across 127 countries by an independent Technical Advisory Committee of internationally renowned experts.
The award ceremony will take place on September 24 in New York (U.S.).
