Peru: Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum sees nearly 3 million visitors since 2002 opening

Over 2.8 million people have visited the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum —Lambayeque region's main tourist attraction and one of Peru's most visited sites— since it opened in 2002.

Visitors got amazed by Lord of Sipan's burial paraphernalia, including jewelry, headdresses, and ornaments made of gold, silver, copper, and precious stones, which adorned his remains inside an uncovered tomb that was discovered intact back in 1987.

This find amazed the world and —due to its scientific dimension— is compared with that of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun.

The museum contains the remains of other Mochica monarchs who lived 1,700 years ago along the valleys of the northern Lambayeque region.

Museum director and archaeologist Walter Alva noted that the cultural site has experienced an annual increase in the number of visitors since its opening —on November 8, 2002— to date.

"A total of 2,851,702 people visited the museum until October this year, of which 2,518,888 were Peruvians and 332,814 foreigners," he told Andina news agency.

This figure indicates that Sipan has gained popularity around the world, as well as in Peru.

"Museums usually have a life cycle. They tend to experience decline or stabilize after 10 years, but we continue to grow (in terms of visits)," he emphasized.
