Peru: Prosecutors inspect former President Garcia's dock

Lava Jato Case Special Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez's office members and the National Police's High Complexity Investigations Division (Diviac) on Friday carried out an inspection at the dock owned by former Peruvian President Alan Garcia at Lima Marina Club, located in the capital city's seashore area.

The Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group investigates the bribes paid by Brazilian companies Odebrecht and OAS to ex-Peruvian Government officials in exchange for public works.

According to El Comercio newspaper, the operation took place within the framework of the statements made by Luis Nava —ex-Secretary General of the Presidency and Production Minister under the Alan Garcia administration (2006-2011).

In this sense, Nava revealed to the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group that Garcia had allegedly received money from the former Odebrecht representative in Peru during the electoral campaign.

"I know that Jorge Barata in 2006, at the campaign building, delivered between five and six lunch boxes with approximately US$60,000 to Alan Garcia," he told prosecutors on September 25 at the Castro Castro Prison.

"Before his second term in office, Alan Garcia signed up to become a member of Club La Marina Lima, in the Costa Verde (area), and he mentioned he had bought a lot at the location of the above-mentioned club to dock a ship," the ex-aide expressed.

Last Thursday, the Judicial Branch ordered the end of the 36-month detention ruled on April 30 against Luis Nava and replaced this measure for house arrest.

As is known, Alan Garcia shot himself on April 17, 2019, once authorities arrived at his home with a 10-day preliminary detention order against him linked to the Odebrecht corruption case investigation.
