Peru President: Government's strength lies in fight against corruption

08:00 | Lima, Feb. 19.

President Martin Vizcarra affirmed that the strength of his Government is the fight against corruption, after saying Peruvians must be united in response to the arbitration lawsuit filed by Odebrecht against the State.

"We have seen a series of attacks against the Government trying to weaken us, but that will be impossible, the fight against corruption is the basis of the Government, that is its strength, and we have the people's support on that matter," he said in statements to RPP radio and TV station.

The Head of State affirmed that secondary interests should not jeopardize the unity of Peruvians in the fight against corruption in response to the arbitration lawsuit that has no legal basis.

In this regard, he reiterated that his Government's stance is clear and firm: "The Executive Branch does not negotiate with companies immersed in corruption, and Odebrecht —by confession— is immersed in corruption cases."

For this reason, he explained, when the ex-Prosecutor in the Odebrecht case Jorge Ramirez met with the Minister of Economy to propose extending the term of Odebrecht's lawsuit against the State, using channels that are not appropriate, the response was negative and the resignation of the then justice and energy-mines ministers was accepted.

The President also said that, in line with his Government's policy of not reaching agreements with companies involved in acts of corruption, the Special Commission that represents the State in international investment disputes responded to the request for a friendly meeting —made by Odebrecht— about the Peruvian Southern Gas Pipeline.

"We told them that we were not going to meet with them because they filed a lawsuit against us before ICSID and because their company was involved in unlawful acts," he stated.

Mr. Vizcarra remarked the State acted correctly when it revoked the concession contract for breach of the consortium —of which Odebrecht was a part of— since it did not achieve financial close.

In addition, the statesman underlined that he is convinced the State will win the arbitration lawsuit.
