Peru: New Prime Minister sworn in

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday administered the oath of office to Guido Bellido, who has become Prime Minister of Peru.

Bellido Ugarte, a Peru Libre party Congressman representing Cusco region, swore in Spanish and Quechua.

The event took place in Pampa de la Quinua (Ayacucho region) as part of the symbolic swearing-in ceremony of the Head of State in this area of the country, where the Independence of Peru was sealed in the 19th century.

Accompanying the Head of State in this activity were Presidents Sebastian Piñera (Chile), Alberto Fernandez (Argentina), and Luis Arce (Bolivia), as well as First Lady Lilia Paredes, and local authorities.

Mr. Castillo was sworn in as President of the Republic for the 2021-2026 term in a solemn session held at Congress headquarters on Wednesday.

Thus, he succeeds ex-President Francisco Sagasti, who had taken office in November 2020 to lead the Transition and Emergency Government until July 28, 2021.
