Peru FA Min meets with U.S. State Secretary

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Gustavo Meza-Cuadra on Wednesday held a meeting with United States Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo in Washington D.C.

During the gathering, both officials addressed the bilateral agenda and underlined the excellent relations uniting the two nations.

Likewise, Pompeo recognized the Peruvian State's efforts in the fight against drug-trafficking, adding the South American country is an ally in this task.

Thus, the U.S. will firmly continue to cooperate with Peru, as this is a shared responsibility.

They also talked about security issues, the fight against corruption, transnational organized crime, and bilateral cooperation, as well as the region's political situation, in particular the crisis in Venezuela, the Inca country's leadership in the Lima Group, and the need to increase sanctions on Nicolas Maduro's illegitimate regime in Venezuela.

Furthermore, Meza-Cuadra mentioned the Peruvian parliamentary elections scheduled for January 26, 2020, and the interest of President Martin Vizcarra in relying on a wide participation of election observers.

Finally, the Secretary of State recognized the role and importance of Peru in the region and expressed his willingness to continue working closely on the bilateral agenda.

Previously, the Foreign Affairs Minister met with Secretary-Generals Antonio Guterres (United Nations) and Luis Almagro (Organization of American States).

As is known, Meza-Cuadra was sworn in as Foreign Affairs Minister on October 3. Previously, the diplomat served as Peruvian Ambassador to the United Nations.
