Moquegua leads
Peru's Regional Social Progress Index 2019 with 62.6 points on a scale of 1-100, being at an upper-medium level, Centrum PUCP Business School Director-General Percy Marquina said Wednesday.
Moquegua moved up one spot in the ranking this year, taking the spot of Lima Metropolitan Area, which occupied the second place with 62.5 points. Tacna ranked third (60.7) and Ica fourth (59.5).
The Social Progress Index (IPS) is based on a methodology that excludes economic dynamism and focuses on variables that help measure the well-being of people.
The study focuses on three dimensions: the first, "Basic Human Needs," includes indicators of nutrition and basic medical care, water, sanitation, housing, and personal safety indicators.
The second, "Foundations of Well-Being," comprises access to basic knowledge, access to information and communications, health and well-being, in addition to environmental quality.
The third, "Opportunities," covers personal rights, personal freedom, freedom of choice, inclusion, and higher education access.
"In the case of Peru, if we consider its current pace of progress, the goal would be accomplished 34 years later, that is, in 2064," he said.
The regions with the lowest scores were Puno (47.2), Madre de Dios (46.8), Loreto (46.7), and Ucayali (44.8).
