6.1M strong earthquake hits northern Peru

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake, with a depth of 36 kilometers, was registered in Peru's northern Piura region on Friday. The National Seismological Center of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) reported that the event had occurred at 12:10 p.m. (local time).

According to the IGP, the epicenter was located 12 kilometers from the city of Sullana —province under the same name.

In fact, the scientific body indicated that the earthquake was felt with an intensity VI in Sullana.

The Andina news agency correspondent reported that some landslides occurred on the cathedral façade in the city of Piura.

According to initial reports, the seismic event was felt in several cities of Piura and other regions of the country, such as Lambayeque and La Libertad. 

The earthquake was even felt in southern Ecuador.

At the moment, National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) authorities are assessing the damage.

For its part, the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Peruvian Navy confirmed the magnitude of the earthquake. However, it ruled out that this event will cause a tsunami on the Peruvian coast.

Update at 04:00 p.m. (local time): In Piura region, the earthquake has so far left more than 40 citizens injured —three of them seriously injured.
