The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) affirmed that the online sale of tickets to Machu Picchu —the country's principal tourist attraction— was an urgent need, since it will result in transparency and predictability; so, it supports the Culture sector's decision of implementing the virtual platform.

In accordance with its powers in the tourism sector and with the vision to make Peru recognized as a sustainable tourist destination, Mincetur considers that the virtual platform (tuboleto.cultura.pe) will enable transparency, auditability, and predictability to facilitate an additional tool to get a better profile of visitors to the Inca sanctuary.

"Under our responsibility to promote the image of our country based, among others, on sustainable domestic and inbound tourism, we reiterate that our priority is to promote the sector, which has proven to be resilient," Mincetur says in a statement.

It states that "the modernization and transparency regarding the sale of online tickets to our main tourist attraction was an urgent need."

"Mincetur finds that achieving sound agreements requires dialogue and coordination with the three levels of government and the private sector," it reads.

"The Machu Picchu Management Unit (UGM) has been the space in which dialogue and concerted actions have taken place to protect and preserve the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu and responsibly attract more visitors," the government agency added.

Finally, it reaffirms its commitment —as the entity that defines, directs, and supervises tourism policies in Peru— to support those actions that allow it to continue promoting the flow of visitors across the regions, which is an important generator of employment and well-being for the country.

Culture Minister Leslie Urteaga stated that as the dialogue with authorities and civil society —on the management of the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu— remains on the table, the in-person sale of 1,000 tickets to the Inca citadel will continue.

"In recent weeks, we have heard concerns from the people of Machu Picchu; so, we decided to continue with the in-person sale, which is conducted through the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco," she said.
