Peru’s Development and Social Inclusion Ministry (Midis) will receive S/38 million (about US$11.6 million) from the European Union to help close the poverty gap in Amazonas, Junin, Loreto, San Martin, and Ucayali regions.
Speaking at a press conference, Midis Head Jorge Melendez and EU Ambassador to Peru Diego Mellado explained this transfer constitutes the second disbursement under an agreement called National Strategy for Development and Social Inclusion Support Program.
Signed by the Peruvian Government and the European Union in April 2016, the agreement provides €40 million (about US$49.02 million) in financial support.
According to the minister, these resources are intended to support the implementation of the aforementioned strategy —particularly in areas focusing on comprehensive development of children and adolescents, as well as on the economic inclusion of their families.
The aim is to further reduce anemia and chronic malnutrition in children —under 3 years of age— through a comprehensive package of services including well-baby checkups, full and specific immunization, and multi-micronutrient supplementation.
EU praises Peru
For his part, the EU ambassador welcomed the progress made in the fight against poverty, focusing on State policies that remain constant irrespective of the government in power.
