Kuelap Fortress —Amazonas region's most popular tourist attraction— won the National Geographic Traveller Reader Awards 2017 in the Far & Away (Overseas Attraction) category.

The other finalists were La Cité du Vin in Bordeaux (France) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (USA).

The National Geographic Traveller Reader Awards 2017 is the definitive word on the best places, experiences, hotels, operators, attractions, media and more, as shortlisted by judges and voted for by readers.

The awards ceremony took place at the May Fair Hotel in London on 27 November and was attended by some of the travel industry's top executives and senior figures.

Kuelap has gained a well-known reputation over the past years thanks to promotional campaigns, improved air connectivity and, of course, to the new cable car system that allows rapid and direct access to the fortress.

The ancient city was included in The Wall Street Journal's top 10 list of hot destinations to visit in 2018.

The site also served as a shooting location for the BBC, which broadcast documentaries shot in the Amazonas region.

Built at the top of the Amazonian Andes in northeastern Peru, the magnificent archaeological site belongs to the Chachapoyas pre-Inca culture.

Seen from the top, the green landscape shows the natural beauty of the place populated by impressive flora and fauna. The area offers an adventurous experience close to the sky.

This mountainous rainforest served as a defense against ethnic rebels, due to its location and structure.

The impressive city of Kuelap is contained within 20-meter-high walls at a mountain area covered with dense vegetation. There are only three entrances to the city.

Pat Riddell, editor of National Geographic Traveller (UK), said: "We had an incredible response from our readers and their opinions have been as discerning and insightful as ever — sharing their tried and tested favorites with us so we can honor the very best in travel."
