Peru is the first South American nation to implement a modern hydrological information system that includes NASA data to monitor water availability and prevent water crisis caused by climate change, Inter-American Development Bank—IDB reported.
On the matter, IDB specialist Mauro Nalesso informed the National Water Authority (ANA) has implemented the Hydro-BID system in 65% of the country's drainage basins. Such progress is yet to be attained in Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Bolivia, which are still in the pilot stage.
Nalesso went to say that 40 ANA specialists have been trained in the use of this tool to enhance water management and availability for population and economic activities' use.
The training also covered prevention of disasters driven by climate variability.
On the other hand, ANA head Abelardo de la Torre expressed his appreciation for IDB's support in this major technological tool. Hydro-BID goes hand-in-hand with the government's priority to boost drainage basins' development, he underlined.
About Hydro-BID
Hydro-BID Peru is a model system and data base that includes hydrology and climate analysis to calculate present and future freshwater availability in basins and tributaries nationwide.
The tool considers various virtual scenarios to improve short, medium and long-term water planning and management. Likewise, it works on measures to mitigate climate change impacts towards 2020.
Led by AquaFund, the program also involves PepsiCo Foundation, Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, Switzerland's State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance.
