The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has granted US$ 37 million to the regional government of Amazonas, in northern Peru, to develop and implement a comprehensive tourist corridor in the Utcubamba Valley, it was reported Saturday.
Noriji Sakakura, JICA's representative to Peru, Noriji Sakakura, stated the aforementioned project involves the implementation of seven tourist routes in the northern region based on the wide and rich range of cultural and natural resources displayed by the architectural landmarks of the Chachapoyas culture.
The project completion is due to span over 3 years through February 2017 and plans to support the development of communities around the two major tourist spots in the region which are the Kuelap Fortress and the Gocta Waterfall.
"The projects embraces the construction of roads and the enhancing of archaeological/tourist sites and waste disposal facilities for taking care of the environment," he said in statements to Andina news agency.
Likewise, the project will address the institutional strengthening of local governments for an improved management of tourist resources along the Utcubamba Valley, thus contributing to the inclusive rural economic and social development in the region.
Furthermore, Sakakura noted the cooperation agency strongly supports the nomination of the Monumental Kuelap Archaeological Complex for its inclusion to the World Heritage Site List.
