The legendary surfing town of Huanchaco, in Peru's northern Trujillo region, expects to attract nearly 10,000 visitors for taking part in this year's celebrations of the so-called "Huanchaco Carnival".
The festival runs from January 31 through February 1 featuring several activities including the crowning of the festival queen, a surf contest, luau party, creativity in the sand, championships of reed horses, the carnival parade among others.

Local officials are inviting domestic and foreign visitors to join this holidays to share the excitement of this carnival which is considered one of the most attractive summer event in northern Peru.

Unlike other Peruvian carnivals, people celebrate with masks and costumes emulating the renowned Carnival of Venice. This carnival has been held since the beginning of the 20th century.

The historic town of Huanchaco is part of the tourist circuit called the "Moche Route" or "Ruta Moche" and it is the stage of several international surf competitions that brings together leading competitors worldwide.
