Lima will host the 4th Regular Meeting of the South American Defense Council (SADC) of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), to be held on November 26-28 with the participation of ministers and vice ministers of defense in the region.

At this three-day summit, government officials from the 12 member countries will address issues of common interest on defense and security.

Lima will also be the venue for the 6th Regular Meeting of Heads of State and Government of Unasur on Friday, Nov. 30.

At previous SADC meetings, attendees agreed to make more transparent the military stock of South American countries through a new working group.

Another working group was also created to evaluate the feasibility of establishing regional mechanisms to deal with cyber threats in the field of defense and evaluate the incorporation of women in the defense sector at all levels.

The creation of the Defense Council was approved by the Unasur heads of state during an extraordinary summit in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, in December 2008.

Its main objective is to “consolidate South America as a zone of peace, a base for democratic stability and comprehensive development of the peoples, and as a contribution to world peace.”

The 12 members of Unasur are Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
