Peru: Judiciary sentences former Congress Chair Salaverry to eight-year imprisonment

In an advanced ruling on Wednesday, the Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court sentenced former Congress Chairman Daniel Salaverry to eight (8) years in prison and disqualified him from holding public office for five (5) years for the crime of willful embezzlement.

The court also ordered the payment of S/119,577 (US$32,635) in civil reparations.

The sentence will take effect once the ruling is confirmed, with the full reading scheduled for March 21 at 5:00 p.m. (local time), the Judiciary announced via social media.

The former legislator is accused by the Prosecutor's Office of misappropriating more than S/10,000 (US$2,729) allocated by Parliament for representation week expenses.

Salaverry is accused of submitting fraudulent reports to justify activities carried out during the representation weeks of January, February, November, and December 2017, as well as January, February, and March 2018.

The former presidential candidate is also charged with favoring four of his office staff with the assigned travel allowances.
