U.S. Congressman Chris Stewart (R) has addressed the relationship existing between the Inca country, Peru, and his home state of Utah.
"Two years ago, I co-founded the Congressional Caucus on Peru with my colleague from New York, Mr.
(Gregory) Meeks," he said while addressing his peers at Parliament.
The Congressional Caucus on Peru is a bi-partisan group of Congress members, who are dedicated to strengthening the
relationship between Peru and the United States, through a frequent exchange of information, bipartisan events, and the promotion of cultural ties.
The
representative noted the caucus had been launched not only to strengthen bilateral relations but also because "Utah has such a special relationship with Peru."
Within this framework, the official affirmed that "Peruvians are the second-largest immigrant group in Utah," adding "40,000 are living in our State."
"Given that Peru is a major player in trade, education, and technology in Latin America, I strongly believe that it's critical that we maintain a strong connection," he expressed in this sense.
Summit of the Americas
Such meetings are held once every three years.
"While together they discuss common policy issues, they affirm shared values and commit to address challenges facing the Americas," Stewart pointed out.
"As co-chair of the Peruvian Caucus and a
supporter of stability in the region, it was wonderful to see these world leaders commit to strengthening democracy while also fighting against corruption and human rights violations," he concluded.
