President Donald Trump's administration appreciates the leadership shown by Peru in the region concerning Venezuela's ongoing crisis, U.S. State Department spokeswoman for Spanish and Portuguese Katherine Caro said.
"Many countries like Peru are assuming
leadership in a matter as important as Venezuela. Peru has been a leader, and we appreciate it," she told the Andina Agency.
The agreement was reached at the meeting held at Lima-based Torre Tagle Palace, which was attended by 17 Foreign Affairs officials and Peruvian
President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
Approved at the event, the Declaration of Lima also agreed to express full support and solidarity with the democratically-elected
National Assembly of Venezuela.
The document concludes with the commitment to support all credible negotiating efforts in good faith, with the consensus of the parties, and aimed at peacefully achieving the restoration of democracy in the neighboring nation.
The U.S. official also mentioned that the recent tour of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence
through Latin America had among its objectives discussing peaceful solutions to the crisis in the Bolivarian country.
