The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) announced Peru will be the host —in Latin America and the Caribbean— to World Environment Day 2018 on June 5.

In this sense, UN Environment highlighted the Inca country was one of the first nations to join the Clean Seas campaign led by said organization.

Within this context, Environment Minister Elsa Galarza underscored this appointment enables Peru to include environmental policies on the agenda. They are aimed at reducing the use of plastic, as well as showing the efforts and good practices promoted by her administration with the support of various actors.

According to UN Environment, the world uses 500 billion plastic bags per year, and —at least— 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, the equivalent of a full garbage truck every minute.

In the past decade, the world produced more plastic than in the whole last century. Plus, 50% of the plastic humans use is single-use or disposable.
