Pope Francis extended condolences to the families of those killed after a bus fell off a cliff in the hard-to-reach area of Pasamayo, about 75 kilometers north of the capital city, Lima.

"The Holy Father, profoundly saddened by the painful news of the road accident in Pasamayo, which has claimed many victims, raises prayers for the eternal repose of the deceased," the Apostolic Nunciature said in a statement.

In addition to his sympathy, the Supreme Pontiff conveyed comforting words to the relatives, as well as spiritual closeness to the injured ones.

"He asked the Lord to bestow on them the gifts of spiritual serenity and Christian hope, and imparts a heartfelt apostolic blessing," reads the release signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

The accident took place Tuesday on a stretch of the road known as Curva del Diablo (Devil's Bend).

A truck hit the back of the bus before landing on a beach below Panamericana Norte Highway.

The accident has left 51 dead and 6 injured so far.
