Brazil authorized the entry of Peruvian sweet granadillas into its market. Approval was the result of a fruitful coordination effort between the two South American countries.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) of Brazil on Friday published a regulatory act specifying the phytosanitary requirements for the importation of Peruvian sweet granadillas.

The fruit's entry into the aforementioned market has been facilitated since 2013, as part of a mutual cooperation between the Government of Peru —through the Ministries of Foreign Trade-Tourism (Mincetur) and Agriculture-Irrigation (Minagri)— and Brazilian authorities.

Each phase in the negotiation process was coordinated by Peru's National Agricultural Sanitation Service (Senasa) and Trade Office in Sao Paulo (Ocex Sao Paulo).

Sweet granadilla production in Peru covers more than 12,000 ha in the highlands and rainforest.

Top producing regions include Pasco, Huanuco, Cajamarca, La Libertad, Amazonas, Cusco and Puno.

Trade is expected to reach around US$2 million over the next three years. Likewise, exports might be shipped via Interoceanic Highway and Amazon Waterway.
