Lima's Lince district Mayor Martin Principe today presented a modern U.S. custom-made rescue truck to the city's Fire Department N° 4, in order to strengthen their firefighting and rescue capacities.

Decided by district neighbors through participatory budget, the purchase involved a S/1.2-million (about US$353,900) investment.

The unit has an 8-ton winch, a cabin with eight anatomic seats, a built-in generator set, as well as six floodlights for emergencies.

After highlighting neighbors' initiative, the mayor announced free health service access for Lince's firefighters at the local polyclinic.

The ceremony saw the presence of First Lady Nancy Lange, Peru's General Volunteer Firefighters Department (CGBVP) Brigadier-General Cesar Leigh, Interior Ministry advisor Leonardo Caparros, as well as volunteer firefighters.

The First Lady thanked neighbors for their support, and called upon mayors throughout the country to follow in this district's footsteps.

It must be noted Mrs. Lange, born in the United States, comes from a family of firefighters. Her father, uncles and cousins served in the Fire Department in her homeland.
