Peru university students build nanosatellites to be launched into space in 2019

A group of aeronautical engineering students build two nanosatellites that will be launched into space in 2019, with the support of State-run National Commission for Aerospace Research and Development (CONIDA).

This is possible thanks to the inter-institutional cooperation agreement existing between Technological University of Peru (UTP) and CONIDA, which allows undergraduates to join this innovative technological project.

It must be noted UTP pupil Kimberly Rojas and professor Eddy Cuty were selected to receive training on space technologies at the seminar titled "First Summer Camp of the APSCO Student Small Satellite Project," held last year in Beijing (China).

According to CONIDA Secretary-General Gustavo Henriquez, these nanosatellites are designed for academic purposes.

"Missions can be linked to the communication [...], they [nanosatellites] can take low-quality photos because they are cubes measuring 10x10 cm, or perform a very small experiment such as data collection," he explained.

Likewise, Henriquez noted the satellites can be operational for some weeks or even a few months.

At the moment, the group is focused on the construction of a monitoring station that will come into operation in the first quarter of 2018.
